A boom in energy production in Weld County, CO led to the largest percentage increase in employment in the U.S. in 2013. Oil and gas exploration in particular have boosted employment and revenue, with the oil and gas industry paying half of all taxes in the county in 2013—around $264.7 million.
Construction in Weld County has grown significantly, “adding 1,864 jobs, or 25.5 percent, followed by energy extraction and business services” according to the Denver Post.
Weld County has received significant media attention for being the location of Congressman Jared Polis’ vacation home. Polis filed complaints against oil and gas companies in the county in an effort to stop drilling and pledged to politically and financially support local fracking bans around Colorado. Polis withdrew his support for these initiatives after reaching a compromise with Governor Hickenlooper earlier this month.
