NMFS Proposes Authorization for Research-related Seismic Survey Offshore North Carolina

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) recently announced that it is seeking comments by Tuesday, Sept. 2 regarding its proposal to issue an incidental harassment authorization to Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to take 24 species of marine mammals by Level B harassment while conducting a 2-D seismic survey in waters located 10-262 miles offshore Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The purpose of the survey, which would be carried out in collaboration with the National Science Foundation, is to collect and analyze data on the Mid-Atlantic coast of the East North America Margin to investigate how the continental crust stretched and separated during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean and magnetism’s role during the continental breakup.
