Marine Mammal Take Authorized for Research-related Seismic Survey Offshore NC

NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has announced its decision to issue an incidental harassment authorization (IHA) to Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to take 30 species of marine mammals by Level B harassment (including the North Atlantic right whale) while conducting a 2-D seismic survey offshore North Carolina.

The survey is being carried out in collaboration with the National Science Foundation in an effort to investigate how the continental crust stretched and separated during the opening of the Atlantic Ocean and magnetism’s role during the continental breakup.

NMFS notes that the survey “is purely scientific in nature and not related to oil and natural gas exploration on the outer continental shelf of the Atlantic Ocean.”
